DISTANTE
I am António F. Duarte / Distante, a transmedia artist + architect working between Lisbon and Berlin.
My practice engages with dislocation, territory and consciousness as a single unfolding field. I work across painting, installation, film, sound and architecture.
My methodology relies on research pilgrimages: purposeful journeys driven by self-inquiry and a commitment to first-hand engagement with the world. Over time, this has generated a vast multidisciplinary archive: video, sound, 3D scans, photographs, drawings and texts. This material is sampled and remixed into new narratives across media. I don't see archival records as static, but as raw material with its own dynamic potential.
Trained as an architect and a painter, I work in the space between the two disciplines. Hijacking architectural discourse and processes, I build hybrid and speculative worlds from the residues of real landscapes, personal memory and spiritual narratives.
Through my work, I came to understand how generative processes resonate with spiritual and social practices. This shapes what I create: environments for contemplation and exchange, grounded in radical hope and collaboration.
This practice extends beyond the gallery. Through Housing NOW, we design and build prefabricated low-cost housing for vulnerable communities.
Currently, I am an Arts and Media Meisterschüler at Berlin University of the Arts — UdK, focusing on Generative / Computational Arts under Prof. Alberto de Campo and Experimental Film / Media Art under Prof. Nina Fischer.
