DISTANTE
I am António F. Duarte / Distante, a transmedia artist based in Lisbon and Berlin.
My methodology is based in research pilgrimages: purposeful journeys driven by self-inquiry and a commitment to first-hand engagement with the world. For over a decade, I have compiled a vast multidisciplinary archive - video, sound, 3D scans, photographs and texts - whose items I sample and remix to create new narratives. I don’t see archival records as static, but as raw material with its own dynamic potential, waiting to be harnessed in unconventional and evocative ways.
At age 14, I started painting graffiti in the streets of my hometown Lisbon. This sparked a lifelong ritual of inscription on walls, memory, and systems. Hip-hop and rave culture led me to explorations of urban environments, and to the embodied study of places and non-places.
That physicality became the foundation of my visual and sonic vocabulary. Trained as an architect and a painter, I gravitated towards the liminal spaces between the two disciplines. I hijack architectural discourse to build structures for what cannot be located: memory palaces, inner territories, folds between the real and the dreamed.
An insight emerged into how generative processes resonate with spiritual and social practices, which inform my creation of environments for contemplation and discussion in constant transformation. This approach is grounded in radical hope, compassion and collaboration.
I perceive spirituality, Nature and technology as a single unfolding territory, which I strive to bring into visibility through my practice.
I see art as a psychonautic science and pursue a poetic theory of everything.
Currently, I am an Arts and Media Meisterschüler at Berlin University of the Arts - UdK, focusing on Generative / Computational Arts under Prof. Alberto de Campo.
