Conversation with Bill Viola
The more I learn about Bill Viola, the more I admire his character and work. He saw technology as something deeply spiritual: a container of consciousness and higher thought.
About video, he said “Each time you turn it on or off, there is a small birth and a small death (…) This medium has in it the human condition, of human fragility, of temporality”.
His study of religion, mysticism and mythology reached across cultures; driven, I believe, by a conviction that something fundamental connects us all.
Bill was recorded in a long conversation with Rachael Kohn for the 2010 Melbourne Festival. He shares some of his insights on life, art and his belief in the invisible world and how it has shaped him and his path in life.
So refreshing and hopeful to hear his clear words in these complex times.
