LEAP OF FAITH

Leap of Faith is a 2017 sculpture created for Portuguese theatre director and playwright João Garcia Miguel's exhibition Inner World in Lisbon.

In Fear and Trembling (1843), Kierkegaard defined the concept of ‘leap of faith’ as a radical act of commitment to an idea or belief, regardless of whether or not it could be proven. He argued that rationalism cannot fully capture the complexity and nuance of human existence. The philosopher defended that subjective experience, including emotions, intuition and faith, played a critical role in understanding and navigating the world.

Kierkegaard believed that the commitment to an idea or belief provides a sense of purpose and direction, and can lead to a life of meaning and fulfilment. Furthermore, it can provide a framework for social and political transformation. He saw the individual who makes the leap as a prophetic voice, challenging the status quo and working to bring about a more just and compassionate society.

It can be discussed that contemporary theatre often operates in this space of subjective experience. Risk and lived experience are privileged over rational explanation. Both performer and spectator are invited to enter a space of uncertainty, where meaning is not guaranteed but emerges through participation.

Departing from this idea, the sculpture can be read as a mountain/staircase that reflects the surroundings like a black mirror, incorporating the visitor and its surroundings into the work. Although the form is inviting, it can never be climbed due to the disorienting effect that the monolith’s shape and its dark reflexions cause on the viewer.

The spectator is drawn into a participatory experience through bodily engagement with the piece: circling, shifting viewpoints, and participating in the play of reflections.
