MYANMAR

Freshly arrived in Myanmar, for the first stage of my apprenticeship with Burmese painter Shine Lu, I was commissioned to paint a mural at the then under-construction rooftop bar of Hostel9 in downtown Yangon.

Before the coup and the civil war, Hostel9 was one of the main points of cultural exchange for Yangonites and foreigners in the city. The work was conceived as an allegory to Myanmar’s history, religious traditions, aesthetics and colonial past. It was painted under the guidance of Shine Lu.

It was an honor to paint this challenging piece, one of my favorites due to the whole production experience.
