DE ONDE VIEMOS,
O QUE SOMOS,
PARA ONDE VAMOS
Lorentzweiler, Luxembourg, 2018
A large-scale mural based on Paul Gauguin’s Where Do We Come From? What are We? Where are We Going? (1897). By reinterpreting the philosophical framework of the original painting within a contemporary context, the mural addresses migration as a defining condition of modern life.
Dedicated to Portuguese emigrants and the Luso-Luxembourgish community, it is informed by the artist’s residencies in the country and his own family history of migration to Germany, which he continues to experience first-hand. It considers how belonging is negotiated through unspoken agreements, where identity and behaviour are cautiously moderated in exchange for acceptance. This negotiation comes with its own spiritual and psychological challenges.
The work inhabits a space between origin and arrival. It gestures toward a place that is longed for but never fully known, while the present remains uncertain.
