IN UTERO
in u·ter·o — within the womb; not yet born.
What is the relation between the tomb and the womb? Is there a space you occupy after death and before birth, and do you carry consciousness there, or is it just a long sleep?
In Utero invites visitors for a descent to an underground space where they are confronted with a series of archetypes: they could be memories from a past existence, or challenges to be encountered in the coming life. The gallery is transfigured into a place outside of time. Fire, the prima techné, renders visible the works created through the manipulation of matter. Its contemporary offspring - artificial light and projection - bathe everything digital in blue neon-like light.
The work draws on figures from art history, religious iconography and mythology, dislocated from their original narratives. It unfolds through the symbolic and spatial relations between elements and is left open-ended by Nidra, an ever-changing generative work at its centre.
