NIHIL
'Ex nihilo nihil fit' :: 'Out of nothing/nothing is produced: nothing comes from nothing'.
Going against these ridiculous affirmations that we have arrived at a dead end - Nihil - in human history. Nothing else can be invented, everything has been done already. These always struck me as stupid ideas.
I have been developing ideas for this show for the past years. It is an exhibition dealing with the dark side of technology and the way society shapes and has been shaped by man-made devices.
Capitalism has brought us to this point. It devoids our lives of meaning, as Henri Lefebvre wrote in the 60's and 70's. It is it that has replaced rituals and the spiritual dimension of life. It is time for change. A speculative fiction about a dystopian world very similar to our own is used as a departure point to analyse apparent unsolvable world problems, which actually have had solutions sometimes for decades. These formulas rarely are put into effect due to existing power structures.
This project engages with these ideas not by assuming a nihilistic posture but by engaging with works from different fields that are using technology to improve the condition of the world. Usually, these inventions are not given due exposure, as they propose effective solutions to root problems and not mere treatment of symptoms. Vectors covered will include food, shelter, clothing, health and alternative energies.
